Circus friends and partners,

In the following paragraphs you can find out more about Circocan – International School of Circus, who we are, what we do and a bit about our history. All this information can be found in Portuguese on our website, but since we have new contracts, partnerships and exchange programs overseas, it is really important for people around the world to meet us and understand who we are.

HISTORY

The early years 2003 – 2009

Circocan International School of Circus (CISC) was founded in October 2003 in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, to teach children and teenagers acrobatics and “modern” circus activities. CISC has chosen to break away from traditional Brazilian style circus schools, (circus family or government funded) and build it’s program through inspiration from most successful schools around North America and Europe.

Since the beginning the main goal of CISC has been to provide fun, entertainment, and a healthy option for exercising the body and mind with acrobatic activities. With this formula, in less than one year CISC outgrew their previous location and relocated to a  700m² fully equipped facility.

From 2004 to 2007 CISC taught kids, adults, and even elderly (students ranging from five to seventy-five years old!) the most popular circus acrobatics; trapeze, fabric, trampoline, and ground acrobatics.

In early 2007 CISC received notice that they would be required to vacate within seven days. CISC was forced to re-create their current program and develop new projects that would run independently of the current facility.

Workshops, holiday camps, and corporate training became an important segment of the business, and during this time CISC start to develop their new flying trapeze program.

Newspaper and TV shows reported the Flying Trapeze for the first time in the city

In May 2008 CISC came to an arrangement with Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) located in downtown Curitiba to start an extension circus program in their facility. Later that year CISC brought Curitiba it's first public flying trapeze rig, fully equipped with safety harnesses, lines, nets, and a multi-lingual trained staff. After success with UFPR, CISC decided it was time to relocate to their own facility.

For the next two years CISC spent time teaching in local schools, performing in corporate functions, and building a new training center.

2010 – 2011

In June 2010 the CISC Training Center was officially opened to the public. Aside from the lakes, soccer field, chapel, swimming pool, and game room, the CISC Training Center is fully equipped for a large range of circus activities.

The 100,000m² site includes a full sized flying trapeze rig, an indoor area for aerial acrobatics (straps, tissue, lyra, trapeze), courses for parkour and free running, slack line, and trampoline.

Since opening, CISC’s new facility has been used for classes, workshops, corporate events, and summer camps. In addition to the training facility, CISC began “mobile” circus classes, where CISC instructors travel to local elementary schools, actors and dance academies to bring accessible circus programs.

CISC also began to hold aerial acrobatics, parkour, and fitness classes in the largest private university in Curitiba, Pontifíca Universidade Católica do Paraná (PUC-PR).

In 2011 CISC decided to send three staff members to train acrobatics overseas at other circus schools. The goal was to bring back teaching and technical knowledge that would further develop CISC’s programs. Staff members attended Flic Scuola di Circo in Torino Italy, and the Beijing International Arts School in China.

2012

The start of 2012 was exciting for CISC. For the first time, a post-graduate level university course in circus acrobatics will be offered at PUC-PR, coordinated by one of the CISC team members.

Most recently CISC expanded programs to Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil at the Jurere Sports Center. CISC offers circus classes, acrobatics, fitness classes, and trapeze workshops for every age and level.

Since CISCs founding in 2003, the company has come a long way, from teaching recreational acrobatics to where it is now; performing, stunt work, parkour, flying trapeze, ground acrobatics, rigging, and both mobile and academic circus programs.
